Hiring a Rater

Raters and builders negotiatie their own arrangements for services to be provided.

The list of raters on the Green Built Michigan website are those who have participate in the Green Built Michigan training and are knowledgable of our checklist, carry the appropraite liability insurance, and are members of RESENT.

The Rating Process

Builders should select a rater they would like to work with prior to the start of construction.

The rater will review preliminary plans, visit the home once framing is complete, and visit the home again upon construction completion.

Throughout the construction process, the builder may be asked to provide documentation, including schedules, material lists, product details and photographs to assist the rater.

Once the checklist has been completed, the rater will review the score with the builder. The checklist will then be submitted to Green Built Michigan for processing. A copy of the checklist will remain on file at the Green Built Michigan office. A certificate showing the home has been certified will be sent to the rater or builder. The builder has the opportunity to purchase a certified plaque for this home.

Energy Raters

Perhaps you have heard the stories. Perhaps you have been one of the victims...Raters agree to verify a home, take the builders money, and no certificate is ever received because the rater is no longer certified and insured, making them unable to process the rating.

Before you hire an energy rater, make sure they are certified and insured. You can find a list of active raters on the Residential Energy Services Network website.
